Tips for using Twitter
- Tweets follow a single rule – they cannot be longer than 140 characters. Followers subscribe to users’ streams of tweets and you can choose to follow individuals and organisations most relevant to you or your business, particularly influencers who you can start to build a relationship with. You can choose to leave your Twitter account open, which is the default setting and allows anyone to view or you can restrict access if required.
- Tweeting frequency is very much your decision and is based on your business, the trends in that industry but recommendations are you should not tweet more than 2/3 times a day. For businesses, Twitter has become one of the many ways to announce a new product, link to a press release or case study or talk about a new promotion you are running.
- A good way to increase engagement on Twitter is to ask a question (and use the ? as well) or use some of the doing words such as “please”, “retweet”, “check out” as shown in the list below. This is a way to learn what your followers are interested in.
- You could use Twitter for research by putting keywords into Twitter’s search function to find information on a topic you’re researching and see what others are saying about it.
- You can look for what people are saying about it on Twitter by using a hash tag (#) before the search term. If you’re providing a link to a Web site or blog, run it through a site like bitly.com or tinyurl.com to conserve space.
- Another tip is also if you wish to reply to someone using Twitter use their name immediately before writing your comment such as “@lisabadcock Thanks for sharing your blog post”. This is then seen by that person and anyone following you both. For public view you would need to add a character (many use a full stop) before the name.
